Each year, the festival’s appointed curator (or curators) carefully selects the themes explored, inviting artists from around the world to offer alternative scenarios of survival. This year, the focus of the contemporary art festival “Survival Kit” is long-distance friendships, emphasising solidarity over power dynamics.
Since 1993, the festival has consistently pursued its mission of critically examining and reflecting on the ever-evolving facets of contemporary society. It has established itself as a pivotal platform for the Latvian Centre for Contemporary Art (LCCA) to showcase its unwavering dedication to artistic research, creative expression, and the advancement of contemporary art processes, both within Latvia and on an international scale.
The LCCA, as an associated partner, has extended an invitation to young researchers for an event scheduled for September 8th, which they’ve titled “Riga Episode.” This event will be a dynamic and interactive performance held at the Vidzeme Market, featuring artists Claus Schöning Lam Yong (DE), Bernadett Jobbágy (HU), Nele Hartmann (DE), and Līva Rutmane – Kalniņa (LV). During this event, they will breathe new life into the evolving artistic process and seek to educate the general public about the art creation process.
Event Details:
- Time: 6:00 p.m.
- Language: English
- Registration: No advance booking required.

Contemporary art festival Survival Kit 14 will feature two exhibitions – the festival’s central exhibition Long-Distance Friendships, curated by Inga Lāce and Alicia Knock, and the final exhibition of the inspiring project Artist is Present. In close friendship with the 14th Kaunas Biennial, a sister exhibition will be presented in Lithuania under the same title – Long-Distance Friendships. Survival Kit 14 and the 14th Kaunas Biennial are linked by close mutual friendship, exchange of ideas and a common range of issues to be explored.
The festival is scheduled to take place in Riga, spanning from September 7th to October 8th, 2023.
